Joanna was the younger sister of brothers John, Wilbur, and Floyd, all of whom served with distinction in WWII. Joanna was very much aware of the sacrifices that her family made during these turbulent times. Lessons learned of patriotism, bravery, love of family and the importance service to others would serve Joanna well throughout her life.
Joanna was an excellent student, eventually earning an academic scholarship to Hardin Simmons University. During this time she would meet and later marry August (Gus) Langwell III. Joanna and Gus had three children Mark, Jeffrey, and Paula.
Joanna’s work experiences eventually led her to employment at the University of Texas at Austin HR Department. Joanna especially liked assisting UT staff with their benefit and retirement planning. She would eventually retire from UT and settle in College Station.
Joanna loved College Station where she quickly made many new friends. She was passionate about volunteering, leading her to serve on many City of College Station committees and boards, as well as Senior Circle, with which she traveled extensively with her dear friend Phyllis Davis.
The crown of her volunteer work was College Station Mayor Nancy Berry
proclaiming August 12, 2012 Joanna Yeager Day for the City of College Station.
Joanna was preceded in death by her parents Omer and Francis Gravitt; brothers John, Wilbur and Floyd Gravitt; and loving son Jeffrey A. Langwell.
She is survived by her son Mark Langwell and wife Sandy of Rockdale, Texas (adult children Megan, Matthew and Dustin); daughter Paula Langwell Schulte of Cypress, Texas (adult children Tommy and Sarah); and Vickie Barber Langwell of North Carolina, surviving spouse of Jeffrey Langwell (adult children Paul and Lauren); and many great-grandchildren.
A visitation for Joanna will be held Monday, July 11, 2022 from 5:00 PM to
7:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Chapel College Station, 2901 Texas Avenue South, College Station, Texas 77845. A memorial mass of Christian burial will occur Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 2541 Earl Rudder Freeway, College Station, Texas 77845.
