Susan Elizabeth Whitby

Susan Elizabeth Whitby, a beloved mom, grandmother (SueSue), wife, sister, and lifelong caregiver, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 23, 2024. Born April 11, 1950 in Houston, Texas to Karl Henry and Grace Elaine (Steed) Oelfke, she dedicated her life to nurturing others and spreading joy.

She grew up in Lake Jackson and graduated from Texas Christian University in 1972. She married William David (“Bill”) Whitby on May 10, 1976.

After the birth of their first son, John Michael, in 1978, she became the Preschool Director at First United Methodist Church in Waco, Texas. This began a joyous adventure of serving the Lord through many educating avenues. After Karl David was born in 1984, her involvement grew as she became involved in the Junior Service League.

After Bill’s multiple sclerosis progressed, the family moved to New Braunfels, Texas in 1993. In 1996, the family moved to be closer to her parents in Lake Jackson. In Lake Jackson, she taught at Velasco Elementary and then Polk Elementary. Susan’s passion for teaching was evident in her 30+ years as a beloved elementary school teacher. She inspired countless students with her creativity and kindness, always going the extra mile to ensure they felt valued and supported. She retired in 2014 to be a full-time grandmother and caretaker of her parents. She frequently volunteered at school and nursing home events.

A loving mother to two sons and an adoring grandmother to five grandchildren, Susan’s family was her greatest pride. She cherished every moment spent with them, whether it was gifting a book or “giving sugars”, gatherings were always filled with laughter and love.

Susan was an active community volunteer, helping local charities like home delivered meals and calling bingo at Sodalis. Her warmth and selflessness touched everyone she met.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Susan is survived by her sister, Melinda Oelfke; her sons, John Michael (Kacey) Whitby and Karl David (Crystal) Whitby; grandchildren, Madison, Mary Elizabeth, Will, Thomas Henry, and John David.

A Celebration of Susan’s life will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Brazos Pointe Fellowship of Lake Jackson at 2 p.m.
