Sofe Mata, 87, passed away on May 22, 2023, in Lake Jackson, Texas. Sofe was born on September 30, 1935, in Laredo, Texas to Manuel and Manuela Martinez. She attended Martin High School and raised all her ten children. After raising her children, she worked in the hospitality field. Sofe was a strong, courageous, energetic, high-spirited and brave woman who kept her family and God close to her heart. She worshipped at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Sofe enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Church Catechetical Sunday was one of her favorite hobbies. She enjoyed all church functions, teaching Catechism and was a member of the Guadalupanas. In 2001, she moved to Lake Jackson to help care for her children and grandchildren.
Sofe is survived by her sons Esteban, Juan Antonio, Javier Marcos, and daughters Maria Antonieta Quintanilla, (Francisco Javier), Hilda Irene Trevino, Diana Buyo (Roger), Laura Sinha (Anil); her nineteen grandchildren; her forty-one great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Francisco David, Jose Luis, Manuel Jr., Valdemar, Antonio, Maria, Roberto, Carlos, Raquel and a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband Esteban and sons Narciso, Ruben, and Hector.
A funeral service to honor Sofe’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 10:00-2:00 p.m. at Restwood Funeral Home & Memorial Park. Burial will be held on Monday, May 29, 2023 8:00-9:20 at Fred Dickey Funeral Home (1320 Trey Dr.) and mass at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Laredo, Texas. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at Alz.org. We would like to acknowledge the help provided by Dr. Dalal, Dr. Amin, IPH nurses (Morgan) and Sofe’s friend Rosa Reyes.
