passed away on January 9, 2019 in Clovis, California, surrounded by the love and care of her close family
after finally having succumbed to a months-long battle against cancer.
Susie is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Louis and Marilyn Krug Grether; and her brother
Christopher Dean Grether.
Susie was survived by her two sisters, Katherine Cash of Clovis, California and Margaret Grether Walker
of Great Falls, Virginia; her brother Peter Krug Grether of Los Angeles, California; and her son,
Christopher Marshall Grether of Clovis, California. She is also survived by her uncle and aunt, Mr. and
Mrs. James Krug of Knoxville, Tennessee and cousin Andi Krug Teter of Lenoir City, Tennessee.
Susie was born on April 27, 1956 in Fresno, California to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grether. She graduated
from Bullard High School in 1974. Susie came to work at the law offices of Emerson & Yrulegui in 1988,
initially working in the billing department. In 1998, she continued with billing and also took over office
accounting. She was responsible for medical and liability insurance matters. In 2002, she became the
office administrator in addition to her extensive other duties. Her boss, Jim Emerson, describes her as
scrupulously honest and as someone who always had your back, no matter what the situation. She was
an extremely dedicated and hard-working person as evidenced by the large amount of responsibility she
took on at the law office. After retiring from Emerson, Susie volunteered at the American Red Cross. At
the time of her cancer diagnosis, she had been offered a permanent position there as an assistant to the
regional manager.
Susie had a wonderful sense of humor and could be wickedly funny. She was a fun-loving and very loyal
person, always effervescent and full of life. She loved reality television, especially “Big Brother.” Susie
had a great affection for cats and possessed great empathy for the humane treatment of animals. She
and her son Chris adopted and fed stray cats and kittens outside their home.
At the end of her life, Susie wondered if she was supposed to feel some great accomplishment for the
life she had led or if it was okay to say that she had not made a big impact but always did the best she
could. In her humility in those final weeks, she might not have fully realized just how big of an impact
she had on those around her, especially her family and friends. Anyone who knew Susie was honored to
be a part of such a special person’s life and was, indeed, made a better person for ever having known
her.
