Survived by his children Kim (Don) Marl, Karen (Allen) Tunstall, Kathy (Howard) Sands, and John F. Rea; grandchildren Allison (Mark) Jacob, Max Marl, RJ and Jake Sands; great-grandchildren Ben and Vivi Jacob.
John loved his family and was very proud of them. He loved his sports as well. He was scouted to play hockey for the Chicago Blackhawks; however, at that time he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Because of his athleticism, John entertained the troops there playing baseball, which upon his return to the states led to a tryout with the New York Giants.
After meeting Joan, his life changed course. John became a fireman for the city of Grosse Pointe and at the age of 51 went on to become a policeman as well. In addition to working at the station and raising his family, he coached the Detroit Junior Red Wings, and was an honored member of the Detroit Red Wing Alumni Association earning him an Iron Man Award.
His family, friends and neighbors will miss his laugh, gift for gab and his genuine kindness toward others. Dad - "we love you and will keep in touch."
A memorial visitation in John's honor will be held at Resurrection Funeral Home, 40800 Hayes Road, Clinton Twp., MI 48038, on Saturday July 8, 2017 starting at 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Donations can be made to the Disabled American's Veterans Association.
