Dana A. Gire, age 78, of Clinton Township, Michigan, died of heart failure on July 10, 2022, at The Parkdale Hospice in Clinton Township. Dana was born in Sabina, Ohio, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Ohio State University, where he also pursued graduate studies in Political Science. He was married to his wife Sharon for 56 years.
Dana was a professional in the field of alcohol and drug abuse prevention, becoming the Prevention Coordinator for the Macomb County Office of Substance Abuse. He published writings, taught courses, and was the chairperson of several local and statewide committees in the field of substance abuse prevention. He was recognized as the "Preventionist of the Year" by the Michigan Prevention Association and became co-chair of that organization.
Dana collaborated with his wife Sharon, a representative in the Michigan legislature, to pass a law controlling diversion of prescription drugs. The two were well known for the cookouts they hosted to support candidates for public office.
Dana was recently predeceased by Sharon. He is survived by brothers Tom (Judith) and Mike (Marguerite), and by Sharon's sister Judy. Dana and Sharon's family and friends recently came together at a memorial service for Sharon. The family asks that they now remember Dana as well and hold him in their thoughts and prayers. Memorial contributions in his name to the giver's favorite charity are encouraged.
