Vergie Elizabeth Turcotte Hardin, 104, was received home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 3, 2011. A funeral celebration will be 2:00pm Monday June 6, 2011 in the Old Sanctuary of First Baptist Church in Clinton preceded by visitation at 1:00pm. Visitation will also be 4-6pm Sunday June 5, 2011 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial will be in Clinton Cemetery.
Mrs. Hardin was born December 22, 1906 in Magee, MS. She was the daughter of Henry Eugene Turcotte and Caroline (Carrie) Virginia Wynn Turcotte. The family moved to Clinton, when she was 16 years old, where she graduated from Clinton High School in 1924 and Hillman College in 1926. Vergie and her three sisters were affectionately known as “The Turcotte Girls”.
After teaching school for one year in Isola, MS she married W.S. Hardin from the Meridian area. Rev. Hardin was a ministerial student at Mississippi College. Following his graduation from MC they moved in 1926 to Louisville, Kentucky to attend seminary and their first pastorate in Adairville, KY for 12 years. Other areas of ministry were Drew, MS for 8 years, Titusville, FL for 15 years, and 15 years in Venice and Sarasota, FL. She returned home to Clinton in 1984 after her husband’s death.
She became a very faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Clinton. She taught Sunday School, loved singing with the Joy Makers Choir, and going on many of the choir tours. She was also a member of Forever Young, Woman’s Missionary Union, and the Clinton Study Club.
Throughout her years, Mrs. Hardin was active in many areas of Christian service in local churches, as well as associational and state levels of the Baptist Church. She was greatly dedicated to the music ministry, serving as pianist or organist for many years. She loved working with all children and youth groups especially the mission organizations. Truly her motto was, “Take My Life, Use Me Lord, Make My Life Useful To You”.
Mrs Hardin is survived by a sister, Ruby Tuurcotte Salley of Jackson, TN, 10 nieces and nephews, and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews. Deceased siblings of Mrs. Hardin are Robert E. Turcotte, Sr., Marie Turcotte Moeller, Sarah Turcotte Trotter Douglas and William H. (Bill) Turcotte.
