It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and best friend, Judith Lamont (Treat) Jacobson, 85, of Clinton, CT and East Boothbay, ME. Judy passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7th, 2019.
Judy was born on May 19, 1934 in Jamaica Plain, MA to Helen (Kelher) and George Albert Treat and raised in Milton, MA. She graduated from Milton High School in 1951 and went on to earn her B.S. in Education from Wheelock College in 1955. She began her long teaching career at the Josephine Foster School in Braintree, MA from 1955 to 1960.
Judy was married on August 27th, 1960 at the Mattapan Baptist Church, Mattapan, MA to Robert E. Jacobson of Milton, MA and Boothbay Harbor, ME. As an Air Force wife, she travelled extensively, living in Biloxi and Columbus, MS; Merced, CA; Reno, NV; Omaha, NE; Grand Forks, ND, and finally settling in Clinton, CT in September of 1968.
Judy was a dedicated educator spending many years in the Clinton school system, primarily teaching fourth grade at the Abraham Pierson School. She loved her students and found something special in each and every one of them. Years after her retirement she would encounter former students who would thank her for making an impact on their lives. In 1994 she received the honor of being named as a runner up for Clinton Teacher of the Year.
She was a longtime member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in Clinton and served on the diaconate. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority and the Middlesex Retired Teachers Association.
Judy’s sense of humor was legendary. She could brighten the saddest day with just the twinkle in her eye. She was a talented knitter, devout New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan, animal lover, and avid reader. Judy would enjoy nothing more than a cup of coffee, a good book, and her favorite spot on the outside porch looking over the waters of the Lineken Bay at the family cottage in Maine, a beloved respite that her parents purchased over 83 years ago.
Undoubtedly, her greatest joy was her family and her many rescued pets. There was never a time when a lucky cat or dog wasn’t curled up by her side.
Her grandchildren, Christina, Phoebe, and Annabel were the loves of her life. With Christina, she shared a love of reading, needlepoint, education, and poetry . Christina especially loved sitting and talking to her Grandma about the history of the Treat family and spending hours with her talking about past relatives. Phoebe was her comic spirit animal, enjoying countless hours of silly stories and laughter. Annabel brought her great joy, along with the drawings of her Grandma’s beloved pets and an endless supply of Trader Joe’s treats and hugs.
Judy is survived by her heartbroken children, Robert and his wife Joanne (Malinn) Jacobson of Foxborough, MA and Dawne and her husband Clark Young of Clinton, CT. Missing her terribly are grandchildren Christina and Phoebe Young of Clinton, CT and Annabel Jacobson of Foxborough, MA. She also leaves behind her niece Jayne Gordon and her husband Don Bogart of Damariscotta, ME, nephew Richard and his wife Tracy Gillespie of Lovettsville, VA, great-niece Abigail Gordon of Boothbay Harbor and Portland ME, former husband Robert E. Jacobson of Boothbay Harbor, ME, nephew Brett Hedberg of Boothbay Harbor, ME, niece Catherine Hedberg of NY, NY and many dear friends along with her beloved retriever Julie. She was predeceased by her grandmother Emma Kelher, her parents George and Helen Treat, her sister Barbara (Treat) Gillespie, and brother-in-law Donald J. Gillespie.
We would like to take this moment to acknowledge and thank, from the bottom of our hearts, the many doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who helped make this long, progressive battle a little more bearable. In particular, we’d like to acknowledge the caring and supportive staff at Apple Rehab in Old Saybrook, CT for their genuine care for our mom and the endless support for us.
A very special thank you to Pastor Christopher Horvath and wife Carol for your friendship, inspiration, and unwavering faith. You both meant the world to her.
A memorial service will be held at the First Church of Christ Congregation in Clinton, CT on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 11am. Friends are invited to gather afterwards in Fellowship Hall for refreshments and fond memories. Burial will be private at Milton Cemetery, Milton, MA.
