James Smith was born on September 1, 1938 in Haynesville, Alabama to Hugh Sr. and Roseanna Smith. He received his education in the Lowndes County Public School System. After graduating he met the love of his life Gillian Y. Butler and they got married and had a daughter Felicia M. Smith.
In 1965 James and Gillian Y. Smith moved to Cleveland, Ohio. James’ first job was Adecello & Sons, then started working for Union Carbide, and from there he retired from the United States Postal Service after 20 years.
James Smith also had hobbies that he enjoyed, like working on cars and remodeling. He also loved traveling, photography, and playing the guitar, he was very sociable. He also liked to dance and listen to music. He was a faithful member of the Even and Odd Social Club.
James Smith departed this life on September 5, 2023. He leaves behind his beloved wife Gillian Y. Smith, his daughter Felicia M. Davis (Dennis L. Davis, Son-in-Law), and his granddaughter Kiera Y. Minter. Arthur, Hugh, William and his sister Minnie preceeded him in death. James also had four sisters-in-law Legret, Ada, Maryann and Narzina and a brother-in-law Willie J. Arrington and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A wake for James will be held Monday, September 18, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Cummings & Davis Funeral Home, 13201 Euclid Avenue, East Cleveland, Ohio 44112, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 PM.
