SOLOMON STEPHEN PAPELL ("Steve"), age 97, died July 8, 2015. Steve was a First Lieutenant during World War II in the Army Air Corps. Beloved husband of Selma (nee Schlote); devoted father of Daniel (Kim) Papell of Shaker Hts., OH, Jeanne Sweazy of Apopka, FL and Leslie Crete of Grays Lake, IL; loving grandfather of Maddy and Gabe Papell and Devon Crete. Steve was born and raised in New York City. During WWII he served with honor in the Army Air Corp as a navigator and reached the rank of First Lieutenant. After the war he attended Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland attaining a degree in mechanical engineering. He went to work for NASA Lewis in 1955 and was involved in many important projects during his 37 years as a research engineer. He developed ferrofluid (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrofluid) as a solution to the problem of manipulating rocket fuel in zero gravity, thus spawning the Ferrofluidics industry. Given an award by NASA for this accomplishment his published research is referenced by numerous PhD theses. After retiring from NASA, he worked for seven more years as a consultant. Steve was a loving and devoted family man. He enjoyed hiking, gardening and RV-ing. Funeral services will he held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Seville, OH on Wednesday, July 15 at 1 PM. Please arrive early and line up at the Visitors Center to await the escort to the service location. The family requests NO VISITATION at their home.
