Marion Ester Milby Mrazek was born in 1919 in Hopkinton, RI the 4th child of Dora Richmond and John Milby. Marion grew up in Westerly, RI. Marion was playful, kind and engaged with all she met and brought a special kind of soft sunshine to whomever she was with. Marion graduated from Stonington High School in 1937 and received an RN degree from Memorial Nursing School in Worchester, MA. She married James Mrazek in 1943 in Stonington, RI. They lived South Glastonbury, CT for most of their married life in a home built by Jim who was a mechanical engineer. Initially, she worked as a nurse in private duty nursing. For five years, she and Jim owned and managed the Hi Ridge Motel, in Wethersfield, CT. Then, she became a nurse in the Glastonbury public schools (1964-1980). She started in elementary schools, Buttonball Lane and then Hebron Avenue and then moved to the high school. She then did volunteer work with blood bank and was very engaged with Jim in supporting her daughter Dr. Nancy Roizen by watching her grandchildren when Nancy was on service. In 1997, after the death of her husband Jim, she moved to the Bay Indies retirement community in Venice, FL where she had several friends who worked with her at Hebron Avenue School. In 2016, with the urging of her daughter, she moved to Cleveland, OH to Judson Manor, a charming independent living community in Cleveland, OH where she was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year just prior to celebrating her 100th birthday.
As she thrived elsewhere, she thrived in Cleveland, managing her own affairs, volunteering, taking exercise classes, knitting for benefits, making chocolate cookies and chicken soup for family outings, attending the Orchestra, the Botanical Garden, Cavs, Indians and even a few Brown’s games. In 2019 she enjoyed the first game of the Cavs season and attended an Indian’s world series game the same day. She celebrated her 99th and 100th birthdays at Indians games. But by far her greatest pleasure she said were conversations and time with her family. Marion leaves a daughter Nancy Roizen, MD and her husband Michael Roizen, MD, a grandson Jeffrey Roizen, MD, PhD of Philadelphia and his daughter Julien, a granddaughter Jennifer Roizen, PhD lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband Neil Berman and stepsons Ari and Rafi.
