I am deeply saddened and was so looking forward to seeing Coach Harv at the CHHS '78 Reunion. As assistant track coach at Height High, Coach Harv had a huge influence on my running track. Coach Harv literally introduced me to track in the summer of 1972 where he was the summer athletics coordinator at Heights High. We met up again at Heights where Coach Harv was assistant track coach, and whose influence was a major factor in our team winning the Lake Eric League Championship, and who was there every step of the way to my winning the state championship. Coach Harv was also a good friend to myself and many others, and hosted discussions about our Jewish roots. Coach Harv had a great impact on many athletes and students, and lives on as that rare kind of person who makes you feel like you can change the world.

I have been tearing up all day because I just found out about Harvey and it is such an enormous loss to everyone that was fortunate enough to have known him.  When I was told of his death I said, â€œNO!â€  Harvey Horwitz was â€œMr. Heights High!â€  Harvey had the heart of a giant.  He made an effort to befriend everyone in our class. He epitomized what a â€œmenschâ€ should be.  He was a man of integrity and someone everyone in our class looked up to.  Harvey had an exceptional ability to relate to people of various creeds, nationalities and race. When we graduated from Heights in 1970, I asked him what his plans were for the future and his answer wasâ€¦ â€œI'm going to Israel to live in a â€œkibbutzâ€.  College wasn't mentioned even though I know Harvey had a sports/academic scholarship to a college in Washington.  That statement epitomized the type of person Harvey was.  That was the Harvey we all knew.  Someone who loved Judaism and people even more!  He loved life and lived it!  He was an amazing classmate, individual, father, friend, grandfather, and devoted husband.  It has been a pleasure and honor to have known him.  He was the best friend a guy could have on this Earth and we have lost an iconic figure in the Jewish and Christian community.  I can still see his smile as he twirls a â€œtoothpickâ€ in his mouth while greeting you in class.  Please ask God to comfort his family and friends because we lost a great one and it hurts a lot. Coach  Harv RIP  along with coach Mann. My fondest memories of you include you clocking me  for that 4:15 mile spilt at the Berea Relays.  I can still hear you saying:  " you got a good one going PJ!"

Dear Leah and family, my deepest condolences.  I met Harvey in college, where he was not just a  room mate, but a confidant, and best pal.  On my 21st birthday he surprised me, and came to Israel visiting me at Hebrew Univ.  We worked in the Huleh valley fish ponds in the pouring rain and snow, and had many adventures. His sense of humor, and Zionyut were infectious!  I wish you all well.  May your grieving turn to gratitude over time for such a wonderful man.

I was the school psychologist and we worked together for 15 years as he tried to help his students any way he could.  He was the most dedicated teacher and wonderful and caring human being who thought of others before himself.  His guiding light has gone out.  How sad for everyone.

I was so sad to hear about Hoppy who was my neighbor on Milton Rd. To a very young me, Hoppy was the gentle giant who I thought was a God. He was the guy that taught my brother how to play football, and the originator of the Thanksgiving "Turkey Bowl" on the Milton Rd. field.  He gave me my first puppy. After reading all these tributes, I can see that Hoppy had the same effect on everyone he met. My condolences to his family and friends.

Not a day at without his "good morning" rounds, always a hug when I needed one (he always knew when I needed one), always wishes on the holidays, always a listening ear, always the gift of positive words... miss you Harvey. Thank you.

Chaim had such profound positive impact on my life.  He was my Sunday school Teacher at Park Synagogue and introduced us to some Radical Jewish ideas like nationalism.  He encouraged me on my continuing journey to Yerushalayim and remained a warm friend.  May his memory be blessed.

We lived two doors down from the Harvey Horwitz family on Barrington Road.  Our children played with each other.  Those were wonderful days.  I remember Harvey always outside with his children, walking around and talking with the neighbors.  He and Leah were wonderful neighbors. Our prayers are with you.

Though it has been more than forty years since I had the opportunity to compete against Harvey in both football and track, I will never forget how much I liked the man.  He was just a genuinely "good guy", and win, lose or draw, I always felt that he was more of a friend than "the enemy."  Mattered little that Heights and Shaker were, historically, arch-rivals; he was ALWAYS someone I looked forward to seeing.  My heart goes out to Leah, their children and grandchildren, and to all of the friends and family that this kind man left behind.

I had the pleasure of co-teaching with Harvey in my Biology class during my first years teaching at Heights High.  What an exceptional guy, who was always put the students' needs first.  He also always asked about how the swim team looked each season and was always so supportive of my athletes.  He will be missed by everyone in the district.  Harvey and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers!

I was a manager for the Heights football team from '78-'80. Coach was tough and worked the guys hard.  He was also always there when they needed him , with compassion.  An imposing teddy bear, he will be remembered fondly.

I met Harvey my first year of teaching, 10 years ago. He was so kind to me, immediately taking me under his wing, and offering support. His dedication to the students of CHUH was strong, as was his friendship with colleagues. He always made an effort to keep in touch,  ask about my kids, and sit down for a talk. I worked with Harvey for a few years at Cleveland Heights and he was not only a great teacher but also a very good friend to many staff members. Few people can be called a "true" friend, but Harvey certainly was one.  He was a colleague at Heights High for Jeff. Jeff and Harvey coached together as well.  He was a colleague in special education in several schools for Joan.  We both enjoyed his company, wit, and his wisdom.  Harvey will be missed by many of us.  The world has lost a wonderful presence.  Our thoughts are with his family at such a challenging time.

As a coworker of his, I can say that Harvey will truly be missed. What a great guy. He always had kind words for both students and staff, and it was obvious that he loved what he did.

Harvey was such a kind man and so genuinely concerned about others. His kindness will not be forgotten. Prayers for all who had the opportunity to know him. May he rest in peace.

From the day I met Harvey in 1975, I knew that he was a very special person. While physically intimidating, Hop was the kindest, most gentle, caring person I've ever known. He became like family to me, my children and my late wife. Whenever there was a crisis in my life, he was there for me. One of the most insightful, gifted football coaches I ever worked with, Hop was also my mentor as I grew in knowledge of, and love for, Judaism. More importantly, Harvey was a wonderful and selfless friend, husband, father and grandfather. My heart aches for Leah, his children and his grandchildren.

Harvey always had a smile for me and a kind word.  His compassion for students with special needs was overflowing.  He was a dedicated educator with a huge heart, always thinking of others.  He will be sorely missed at Heights and the community at large.  We are all better to have had him in our lives as a reminder of how to treat one another. My memories of Harvey are of a guy who knew how to have fun, had a sweet and kind soul, and grew up to be a man among men.  May he be a blessing to his family in memory and practice.
