Winston-Salem-Mr. Warren Laverne “Chub” Thomas, 89, died at The Elms at Tanglewood in Clemmons on February 27, 2013. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 2, at 2 PM at Frank Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Reverend Lee Strange officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 PM prior to the service. Interment will take place at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Mr. Thomas was born in Forsyth County to the late Benjamin Cameron and Minnie Williams Thomas. He graduated from Reynolds High School. He proudly served in the US Navy during WWII spending much of his time in the Philippines. While home on leave he married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Newman. He retired from Lucent Technologies after more than thirty five years of service.
Mr. Thomas was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than fifty years. He was an avid Hanes Mall Walker after his retirement and worked hard keeping his yard beautiful. He was a great handyman who loved being in his workshop. He was giving of his time to his wife and children and especially his grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He was a hard worker all his life with a strong work ethic. After his retirement he and Lucille enjoyed traveling and spending almost every weekend together at their home in Fancy Gape, VA.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Lucille Newman Thomas; his daughters and their families, Debbie Barber and husband Jim of Springtown, TX and their children, Kelsey, Vanessa, Jennifer, and Rosie, Donna Drane and husband Tony of Winston-Salem and their children, Misti and Katie, and Dawn Grubbs and husband Kent of Winston-Salem and their children, Lyndsey and Drew; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four siblings.
