Chief Warrant Officer W 4 Ken Wells Johnson, Sr., U.S. Army retired, 79, died August 9, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. Ken was born September 28, 1930 in Duplin County, NC to the late Willis J. and Lena Mae Wells Johnson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Willis J. Johnson, Jr. of Burgaw, NC. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen D. Johnson and two sons, Ken Wells Johnson, Jr. and wife Ronda of King, NC; Jeffery H. Johnson of Charlotte, NC; two granddaughters, Heather and Erica Johnson; and many nieces and nephews. Ken served his country proudly from 1947 to 1973. At the time of his retirement, Ken was a part of the Headquarters Support Group U.S. Army Air Defense Command stationed at the Western Electric Company in Winston-Salem, NC. During his military service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (1st OLC), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Expert MS 1 Man Badge, and the Expert Badge WB/M-14. After his retirement from the Army, for 20 years he was a rural postal carrier for Route 3 in Pfafftown, NC. He was a member of Rural Hall Moravian Church, a member of the Old Town Masonic Lodge, and an avid golfer. Ken loved his God, his country, his family, his community and his friends. He led by example with a generous spirit and a “can do” attitude. His funeral service with full military honors will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Rural Hall Moravian Church, 7939 Broad Street, Rural Hall with interment to follow at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. Friends may visit on Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem.
