George Francis Misslbeck, 97, of Alexandria, VA, recently of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Wake Forest University Baptist Memorial Hospital. George was born in Bronx, New York and graduated in 1937 from DeWitt Clinton High School. George moved to Alexandria, VA where he was employed at the Government Printing Office and met his first wife of 35 years, Jean Parrish (deceased). He served as a corporal in the Army during WWII. George then worked as an editor for the US House Committee on Agriculture, a position that included extensive world travel, until he retired in 1975.
George and Jean raised his surviving daughters, JoAnn and Sue Ellen, in Alexandria, VA. He was devoted to spending time with his family, whether camping, taking road trips, or eating ice cream and counting railroad cars at the train station. He also took pleasure in photography, vegetable gardening, woodworking, collecting and repairing clocks, building model trains, and painting.
George married Jane Overman, his surviving wife of 37 years, and enjoyed a lengthy retirement. He continued to pursue his lifelong interests in travel, trains, clocks and woodworking. He and Jane traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally. George also built intricate dollhouses, furniture and other household items that will be enjoyed by family members for years to come.
In addition to his wife, Jean Parrish Misslbeck, George was predeceased by his parents George and Pauline Misslbeck, and brothers Robert Misslbeck and James Misslbeck. George is survived by his wife Jane Overman Misslbeck; his daughters JoAnn Misslbeck Higgs and Sue Ellen Misslbeck (Karen Gautney); granddaughter Amy Higgs Westmoreland; sisters-in-law Gene Misslbeck and Jessie Overman Stalnaker (Jim); brother-in-law Don Overman (Bobbie); as well as nieces and nephews Nancy Misslbeck Fohner, Gary Misslbeck, Heidi Misslbeck, Gretchen Misslbeck Deel, David Overman, Beth Overman Kempton, and Jennifer Brown.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in George’s honor to your favorite charity.
