In July 1977, he was transferred to Safety Harbor, Florida. Once in Florida he became a captain of a 27 foot sailboat. He enjoyed the days sailing in the Gulf of Mexico with the family. The intercostal trips had a few grounding with the commands to go overboard and push. I am sure there are a few lost flip fops in the mud.
John worked for Martindale-Hubbell , a law directory firm for approximately 20 years which had him on the road 9 months out of the year. His success at work gave him the nick name of Marvelous Marron until he had to retire from a heart attack.
After his heart attack at a young age of 60, he started golfing. He was not the best at it, but it was a great way to spend time with the friends and family. On Wednesdays, he played golf until it was difficult to do. The gang kept the tradition of getting together with meeting for lunch until just a few days before he was hospitalized with his recent heart attack.
When he was off of work and retired he was able to travel. Some of the places he wandered were going to Canada, Tokyo, Australia, and Hawaii. He returned to Europe to revisit the area he saw during his time in Army and other areas such as Italy and Austria. His last trip was to Switzerland.
Cruises were many. The last count is 82. These trips also included a river cruise from Amsterdam to Cologne Germany, to Bermuda, Montreal, New England, Alaska and numerous locations in Caribbean and Mexico.
Not to leave the US out, he had many a trips to areas in Pennsylvania, New York, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Montana, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, California, and Washington. One special trip was to Colorado Springs where he witnessed his grandson Christopher graduation from the Air Force Academy.
John met Beverly Engle in 2014 and they shared many special times going to the Florida Orchestra, traveling, sharing holidays and special events with their families.
