TIMO, Dominic P., of Palm Harbor, FL passed away on 11/29/2015 at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his sister Antonietta. He was a WWII veteran and member of the Greatest Generation and now another one has passed. He served in the army from 1943 to 1946 and saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters. He was awarded service medals, the Philippine Liberation medal, Good conduct medal and Victory medal. A German officer surrendered his P38 German luger pistol to Dom, and it remained in the family for many years.
Dominic was born in Seattle, WA to Italian born parents. His father was a member of the Bersaglieri, a high mobility light infantry unit of the Italian Army, who “always ran, never walked”, serving on the Austrian border. In Seattle, his father grew grapes and made his own wine including during prohibition.
After the war, Dominic was the hero of his family, being the first to graduate college on the GI bill, graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1947 he joined GE and moved to Schenectady, NY and started work as a test engineer. During his 38 years at GE he worked in the Engineering Test Program, Thompson Lab, KAPL, and became manager of Electromechanical Engineering. In Steam Turbines he was manager of Structural Engineering and Development Engineering. He was the author or co-author of over 30 technical papers, was a Fellow of ASME, and Professional Engineer, New York State.
Schenectady is where he met his wife Frances, and they were married for 58 years before her passing in 2009. Dominic has placed fresh flowers on her grave every week since. After retirement, Dom and Frances lived in Bradenton, FL for many years before moving closer to Tampa to be near their daughter Barbara.
Dom was an avid golfer and made every attempt to interest his five children in the sport! Every other summer he would pile Fran and the kids in the car and drive to Seattle, and would enjoy the country along the way including Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Wall Drug in South Dakota, and the 1962 Worlds Fair in Seattle. He and Frances also traveled to many exciting places over the years.
He is survived by his five children: Barbara of Tampa, FL, Michael of Woodland Park, CO, Nancy Meister and husband Larry of Evergreen, CO, Dan and wife Kathy of Orlando, FL, Christopher of Dublin, OH, and three beautiful grandchildren: Allison (Orlando), Michael and Nicole (Dublin, OH), as well as cousins in Seattle. His granddaughter Allison is following in his steps, studying mechanical engineering.
Dominic had a full life and his children will have many years of laughter reminiscing about his stories growing up in Seattle and all of the crazy things that happen growing up in a family with 5 kids. He never missed his children’s Little League, soccer or volley ball games. He was a very kind man. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family and he will be sorely missed.
Dominic will have a funeral mass celebrated at All Saints Catholic Church, Clearwater, FL on Feb 13, 2016 at 11:00 am. Inurnment will follow in Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, Clearwater with military honors, and he will be buried next to his wife Frances.
