Born on September 23, 1939 in Clearfield, she was the daughter of Henry “Nick” and Kathryn Anna (Shubert) Phillips.
On March 25, 1961, she wed William H. Smeal, Jr. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Grampian, PA.
Mary graduated from Curwensville Area High School and DuBois Business College. She was employed by Fred Diehl Motors, as a secretary, before dedicating her life to her husband, children, her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary was a woman of faith who devoted her life to the Lord and to giving to others. When she was able, she assisted at Calvary Independent Bible Church and with the church’s youth group. She was also a volunteer for the Girl Scouts. Mary loved her flower gardens. She enjoyed canning and freezing fruits and vegetables, baking with her beloved grandchildren, doing multiple crafts from cross stitch to decoupage to making homemade Christmas ornaments, and assisting her daughter, Barbara with her Earthen Treasures business.
Mary is survived by four daughters, Barbara Boal of Hyde, PA, Robin Fenush and her husband Joseph, Jr. of Clearfield, Tammy Veihdeffer and her husband Kenneth of Curwensville, and her step-daughter, Cathy Obbema and her husband James of Torrance, CA; five grandchildren, Christine Nicole, Amber Maines, Buddy Boal, Kendra Veihdeffer, and Chenoa Sloss; and six great-grandchildren, Cayden, Mason, Deacon, Jason, Lucas and Lily.
She is also survived by one brother, George Phillips and his wife Diane of Elmira Heights, NY, one sister, H. Jean Phillips of DuBois, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William who passed away on May 17, 2022 and her sister, Barbara.
In honoring Mary’s request, a viewing will not be held. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held for friends and family at Hyde Wesleyan Church with Pastor Angel Scribe on March 25, 2023, at 1:30 PM. Interment will be in the Friends Cemetery, in Penn Twp., Clearfield County.
