She was born September 25, 1923 in Watertown, New York. Natalie was the daughter of Ross Brayton Phelps, Sr. and Gertrude E. Johnson Phelps who parented five additional children, all of whom predeceased Natalie.
She graduated from Albany Business College in 1943 and received her MS degree from Syracuse University in 1947.
While at Syracuse University, she met her Charles “Chuck” B. Tennant, her late husband. Chuck and Natalie had two sons, Martin (Holly) Tennant of Kansas City, MO, and the late Charles E. Tennant. Natalie was a devoted mother, always entertaining all of Marty’s and Charles’ friends with her many treats and delicious meals.
Natalie returned to the education world as her sons grew up. She got an additional degree in Special Education in 1971 from Kutztown University and went on to teach special reading and served as an Elementary School guidance Counselor for many years. After retirement, Natalie and Chuck enjoyed traveling, golfing, tennis, bridge, and entertaining. Natalie was an amazing hostess, seamstress, gardener, knitter, and able to make any craft necessary to complete her decor or next party.
She was always surrounded by her friends. To know her was to love her.
We wish to express our gratitude to the staff of Carolina Meadows, where she resided since 2008, Wisdom Homecare Providers and the wonderful Hospice Angels (nurses), who took such wonderful care of Natalie in her final days.
Remembrances may be made to UNC Hospice Home, 420 Russet Run, Pittsboro, NC 27312 or to a charity of your choice.
