Frederick “Fred” Michael Manning, passed away on May 3, 2016 surrounded by his family. Fred was born on July 16, 1932, in Racine, Wisconsin, to the late Frederick Manning, Sr., and Irene Eisenhut Manning. Fred spent his childhood years in Racine before entering the Air Force. After serving four years in the Air Force, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He later earned his Masters of Nuclear Engineering from Catholic University in Washington, DC. In the early 1960s, Fred worked for the Grumman Corp installing Atlas Missiles around air bases. In 1961, Fred was in a serious car accident. It was at this time he met his nurse, Phyllis Olson Manning. He and Phyllis later married on April 28, 1962 and began their family with three sons, Keith, David and Mark. In the 1970s, Fred worked for Boeing testing the Saturn Rocket and the family moved frequently as the testing progressed, ending up in Houston, Texas. He was a member of a monitoring team for the moon landing of Apollo 11. As the space program was winding down, Fred transferred to the Atomic Energy Commission in Maryland. Fred retired in 1995 as a Nuclear Engineer. Upon retiring, Fred and Phyllis relocated and settled in Garner. Fred was always a very caring and giving person to his family, friends and neighbors. He was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, restoring old cars and walking every day. Fred is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; his children: Keith Manning (wife Tina), David Manning (wife Gina) and Mark Manning (wife Lorrie); seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; his brother, Wallace Manning and sister, Margaret Manning Boudreau and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Bernice Lott and brother, James Manning. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Research or the Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund of Raleigh. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM at McLaurin Funeral Home, 12830 US Hwy 70, Clayton, NC 27520 followed by a private graveside service at 2:00 PM.
