Alton (Bo) Wood, age 88 of Clayton, North Carolina peacefully went to be with his Savior on May 3, 2021 with his family by his side. Born March 15, 1933 to the late John Alton Wood and Vergie Barbour Wood, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army before working the next 30 years for North Carolina State University in Tobacco Research. All the while, farming various crops. After retirement, he farmed the family farm providing fresh produce to local businesses as well as the public. The holidays were the busiest times as people drove from miles around to purchase the family’s famous collards. He enjoyed serving as deacon and choir director at Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church in Clayton. Bo volunteered for several years with the band boosters at Clayton High School. He had a great passion for hunting, fishing, spending time in nature and his rabbit dogs.
Alton (Bo) Wood was preceded in death by his first wife, Flora Harper Wood; his infant son, John Eric Wood; his daughter, Susan Wood Brown; and his second wife, JoAnn Powell Wood. He is survived by his children Alton E. Wood, Jr. (Joan) of Elizabeth City, Johanna Wood of Clayton, Robert Wood (Rhonda) of Apex, son-in-law, Gregg Brown of Clayton and two stepsons Scott Powell (Donna) of Garner and Keith Powell (Paula) of Illinois. He had seven grandchildren Katie Brown of Clayton, Sara Brown of Clayton, Joshua Alton Wood of Elizabeth City, Rebecca Wood of Apex, Joylynn Wood of Apex, Mary-Scott Baker (Jacob) of Garner, and Charlie Powell (Megan) of Clinton. He is survived by six siblings Helen Little of Clayton, Lillian Ann Miller of Tallahassee, FL, Keith Wood (Judy) of Seven Lakes, John Dallie Wood (Ann) of Clayton, Stephen Wood (Tillie) of Greenville, and Randy Wood (Laurie) of Ivanhoe. He is also survived by his granddog and beloved buddy, Stripe.
The service celebrating the life of Alton (Bo) Wood will be Friday, May 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at McLaurin Funeral Home with visitation at the graveside following the service.
