Mel was obsessed with education and the profession of education always encouraging others to embrace teaching as a career. He did undergraduate work at Northern Illinois U in DeKalb, III and then entered the Army Air Force based in England flying 27 missions on B24 bombers. Following discharge he completed his BA and later MA in Education at San Diego State University. His teaching career began in San Marcos, CA. Followed by principalships at Vista Square and Harborside Elementary School in the Chula Vista District. Incite to join the Grossmont Union High school District he was appointed founding principal of the newly built Mount Miguel High School. Following his retirement Mel enjoyed gardening and developing their +3 acres in Spring Valley. He chose Rotary International as his service club and served as president of the Lemon Grove Club.
Mel is survived by his wife of 70 years Marian who lives at Fredericka Manor Senior Community in Chula Vista , two sisters Ruth Crowley and Bernice Andrake of WA., two daughters: Pam Grant of Camino, CA and Deborah Grant of Rancho Bernardo, nine grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
His family will always remember his sweet temperament and cheerful demeanor, They acknowledge the marvelous care he received from Villa Bonita Senior Living, Kaiser Medical Personnel, Hospice and the Fredericka Manor Care Center.
A private family memorial celebration was held on Friday, September 20, 2013. Cremation is planned under the direction of Humphrey Mortuary.
The family suggests contribution to the Braille Institute where Mel was assisted during his years of vision loss.
