October 25, 1947 – September 4, 2024
John McLaughlin, a beloved member of the Chowchilla and Raymond communities, passed away on September 4, 2024 at the age of 76. Born on October 25, 1947, in Merced, California John spent his early years working on the family ranch and relief milking on local dairies.
A proud graduate of Chowchilla Union High School, Class of 1965, John went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army for three years. After his service, he returned to Chowchilla, where he lived most of his life until he and his wife of 41 years, Nancy, moved to Raymond, California, in 2005.
John was a dedicated worker who held various jobs throughout his youth, including at Farmers Hardware and other local businesses. In 1982, he began his long career at Chowchilla Union High School, starting in the maintenance department while continuing his education and he soon became the school’s woodshop teacher, a role he cherished for 23 years until his retirement in 2010.
Known affectionately as "Coach," John had a deep love for football, which he played in high school and college. He began his coaching career with the local Pop Warner program before moving on to coach at Chowchilla High School for 16 years. He later joined the coaching staff at Merced College, where he helped lead the team to a championship.
In retirement, John found joy in his "Rocking Chair Hill Sawdust Shop," where he built countless projects for friends, family, and his community. He was a cherished figure at the Raymond Christmas Tree Lighting, where he played Santa and delighted children by handing out handmade wooden toys.
For his family, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He lovingly crafted custom cradles for each of his grandbabies and great-grandbabies, treasured heirlooms that will carry his legacy for generations.
