Ricardo Fernandez, Dickie, was born in Los Angeles on March 25, 1934. He grew up with his mom and dad on First Street along with his 2 brothers. When Dickie was 16, his dad moved to El Paso, TX and his mom stayed in Los Angeles where she opened her own hot dog stand across the street from their home. He attended Lourdes Catholic School and graduated high school from Cantwell Preparatory in 1953.
When he was in 11th grade, he met Gloria Reza and swept her off her feet. They dated through high school till Dickie and his group of 19 Drifter car club members enlisted in the Army. After bootcamp, Dickie was commissioned to serve in Germany. He went as a medical record keeper but soon was noticed for his good looks, nice dress, and his attention to detail. He then served the rest of the time as the Base Commander’s driver.
After his four years of service, he headed back to LA to seek out Gloria and start his life. He attended Barber school and married two years later. As they started a family, in the home that Gloria’s dad built for them, Dickie opened a Barber shop in South Pasadena. Loving the suburbs, he soon wanted to move into a newer area. He then pursued his passion for real estate and found his forever home in Hacienda Heights.
His new adventure in Hacienda Heights found him three more girls, bringing the total to five, and a booming business in real estate. He opened an office in Hacienda Heights and then a successful Century 21 in Brea. He won lots of real estate awards and provided well for his family.
Unfortunately, his real estate days came to a screeching halt when he was involved in a head -on collision and ended up in a coma with a broken neck. By the grace of God, he miraculously walked again but remained permanently disabled.
Against all odds, he walked this earth for another 30 years where he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and spent his days keeping himself busy putting around the house driving Gloria crazy. As much as he drove her crazy, she still could not resist his bright smile and charming demeanor.
