William R. (Bob) Wofford was born May 28th 1930 in Newberry, South Carolina to William Clyde Wofford and Mary James Wofford, their first. He was the proud big brother to Tom Wofford of Richardson Texas, Jerry Wofford of Newberry, SC (deceased), Walt Wofford of Texas, “The Twins” Patricia Wofford Robinson of Jacksonville, FL and Michael Wofford of Ocala, FL, and John Wayne Wofford (deceased).
He is proceeded in death (2004) by his wife Francis Elizabeth (Peg) Correll Wofford to whom he was married 52 years.
He is survived by his son Robert W. Wofford (Bobby, Woof) and daughter-in-law Jeri L. Wofford of their home in New Bern, NC, and her daughter Sasha Taylor of Charlotte, NC.
As a teenager, he worked in his father’s radio repair shop, and was the projectionist at the local theater. He played football and was in the marching band, where at half-time he would march, in his football uniform, with the band. He graduated Newberry High School, class of 1947.
He entered the United States Air Force in January 1948 and became a Flight Engineer on multiple aircraft of the day, but his clear favorite was the USAF SA-16, the Grumman Albatross, an amphibious airplane. When he stopped flying, he moved to maintenance control, where he directed and scheduled aircraft repairs. He had two tours in Vietnam: Da Nang in 1963 from Pope Air Force Base, and Phu Cat in 1968 from Myrtle Beach AFB. When he returned from his second tour, he retired from the Air Force with 20+ years of service in August 1968.
He married Peggy Correll on September 20, 1952. They spent 52 fabulous years together, raising their son, moving to a number of Air Force bases, and after his retirement from the Air Force settled in Greensboro, NC. Soon, they moved to Fayetteville, NC for Bob’s work. By the mid-70’s, they returned to Landis, Peg’s home town, then to China Grove, where they lived together until her passing.
He retired the second time from Insenhour Brick and Tile in Salisbury, where he managed maintenance and ‘kept the place running…most days’. He and Peg and at least one of her sisters began taking driving trips around America. Up North, Out West, even to Nova Scotia. They traveled to Europe together, and then made a return trip with son and daughter-in-law in tow. A nephew’s wedding in Japan prompted him to once again to take the four of them to help represent the family, where he made quite a nice little speech.
He was an avid Clemson fan and followed NASCAR with a passion. He loved flying and had his first Solo Flight in 2013 at the age of 83, which was featured in the Salisbury Post. He was very proud of that moment. And so he bought an airplane.
In 2016 Bob moved to New Bern, NC with his son Woof, Daughter-In-Law Jeri and opened a completely new chapter in his life. He bought a boat, joined the local Yacht Club, met a wonderful lady, and immediately began working himself into the hearts of yet another group of people who, by all accounts, adored him.
To his son, he was his best friend. They had many adventures together from sailing, to flying kites at the beach, going to NASCAR races, Charlotte Hornets Games, Clemson Football games, Carolina Panther games, and just hanging out. They went zip-lining in West Virginia and even started flying lessons a few years back. In short, Bob was great man to be around. He loved, more than most, being in the Air Force and flying. He told great stories and was always willing to help you with your stories. He was truly a force of nature and he will be dearly, dearly missed.
