Phyllis Jane Daugherty, age 86 of China Grove, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury. She was born on April 29, 1937 in Rowan County and was the daughter of the late Herman Andrew Sechler and Vernie Mae Hampton Sechler. She was a longtime active member of Lutheran Chapel Church. Her ministries included Sunday School Teacher, member and director of the church choir, member of the handbell choir and member of the church council. She graduated from Pfeiffer University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Nursing, and a Master’s Degree in Education from UNC Charlotte. Professionally, she taught nursing at Rowan Memorial Hospital and Rowan Cabarrus Community College. At the time of her retirement, she was Program Head of the Practical Nursing Program at Rowan Cabarrus Community College. Her contributions to nursing education have resonated throughout the community and surrounding areas. Personally, she loved to be with her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were precious to her. She enjoyed cooking and prepared wonderful, and much anticipated home cooked meals for her family on Monday evenings for as long as she was able to do so.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded by two brothers, Nagel Andrew Sechler and Lynn Du-Vall Sechler; a sister, Delores Sechler Cook, and son in law Bill Christie. Those with cherished memories include her son David Daugherty (Joyce) and daughter Andrea Daugherty Christie. Also surviving her are her grandchildren, Chase Andrew Daugherty (Nichole Romanowski) and James David Daugherty (Kaitlyn) as well as her great grandchildren, Elizabeth Mae Daugherty and Turner James Daugherty.
Visitation will be on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Lutheran Chapel Church from 1:00 till 2:00 pm with funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. John Tucker, officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
