She was born on April 2, 1931 in Rowan County and was the daughter of the late Will Spears and Gertaline Turner Spears.
She was a graduate of Landis High School and worked for many years for Linn Corriher Mills. She was known by many as Sis by those who knew her during her life. She was a lifelong active member of First Reformed Church in Landis, where she had been a choir member, served on the Church Consistory and was known for her making of Prayer Blankets for members of the church that she loved.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, George Akers and her son Melvin Akers.
Those with cherished memories are her daughter Vicki Akers Smith (Johnny), her grandchildren Dorian Smith (Dana), Brendan Smith (Whitney), Millicent Spirlin (Michael), Meredith Goodnight (Michael), April Akers and Mary Margaret Akers (David) as well as 11 great grandchildren and her daughter in law Rita Akers.
Visitation will be on Friday, June 30, 2023 from 1:00 pm till 2:00 pm at First Reformed Church in Landis with funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm also at the church with Pastor David Franks, minister. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
