Mark is greatly missed. He was a giant of a man in all respects and touched the lives of people all over the world.
Mark started his life with a grand entry as he was the 1969 New Year's Baby in Neepawa, Manitoba. He was the baby of the family, and grew to be the biggest/tallest. (6’ 6”) At least in the immediate family. He had cousins that were still taller.
Mark leaves behind his parents, George and Nellie, brothers Brent and Daryl, and sister Laura, along with their families, as well as extended family and numerous friends from all over the world.
Mark LIVED his life. “Cruise Director Julie” worked on cruise ships and traveled the world. He hiked, biked and motorcycled all over the place. He even had a specially made collapsible bike that he took with him on the cruise ship so he could explore the different ports where they landed.
Mark had a gigantic heart and always had/made time to help everyone he could. This could entail anything from listening to you, babysitting your kid, fixing your car. Ya even moving you.
Mark had many groups of friends. Family, cousins, friends and friends who were like family. Everyone he met became his friend. He made you feel like you were the only one in the world. When he was with you, he was With you.
He was part of a ballroom dancing community and a stand-up comedy group. He participated at Toastmasters, worked with street kids through Youth for Christ, fixed chimneys and had many friends through his jobs in carpentry and construction. (Interesting fact that I found out was that while I knew he was playing in the world of comedy, recently I found out he was thinking of trying to do it professionally. I think he would have knocked that right out of the park and stood head and shoulders above all his competition...Oh wait...He would have started out that way. lol)
“High Tower” was also part of 2 unions that I know of. (Local 1907 and Local 1928) Working for BFI and EllisDon, as well as doing odd jobs like fixing chimneys and setting up shows. It seemed he could always find some kind of work to do. He seemed to be able to do anything; carpentry, mechanical and he excelled socially. If he didn’t know how, he found solutions. One of the main expressions I heard describing him at work was how gentlemanly he was. He never got involved in the gossip etc. Everyone loved him, and how he was there to help everyone no matter what their trade or experience. A big thank you to all those guys for all they’ve done.
Mark died doing one of the many things he loved, riding his Goldwing. While the accident is unexplainable, we know that Mark is now in a better place, smiling down on us. May he continue to inspire us as we carry on.
Mark is greatly loved and missed by many people who have already expressed their sorrow to me: His landlords, his mechanic, his many friends and family.
I love hearing the stories and experiences that you have had with Mark, and I encourage you to write some of them down on the Henderson Funeral Home page (Chilliwack). It really encourages us, the family. I’m not sure exactly how it will work in this covid world, but if you want to contribute to Mark’s visitation and say your good-byes, we are live streaming from 1-4pm BC time Oct 31. There is a microphone, that I am hoping we can hold a phone to. Or write in Mark’s space on Henderson’s site. We will be reading them out at various times during the visitation. You can link to the visitation through the Henderson website 15 minutes before the service. The URL is https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/chilliwack-bc/mark-wiebe-9570911
Thank you to all the friends who became his local family where ever he was. Some of you have become like family to me already. I appreciate you so much. Jay, Jolene, and Jake, I love you! I would never have been able to get through this without your support. I also want to thank Michelle and Nicki at Royal Columbian Hospital, and Sergeant Porcher and Constable Fuller. You all went out of your way for me, far exceeding your job requirements and really helped me through this time. Thank You!
Laura Hawkes (Sister)
PS In lieu of flowers, I’m sure Mark would appreciate a donation to Youth for Christ in Winnipeg. They contributed greatly to his Life, and the man He became. Go to https://www.yfcwinnipeg.com and click on the “Donate” button, or you can phone them at 204-996-4205 if you would like to donate
