Richmond is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Hamby West. He is survived by his father Rev. John (Pete) West, along with three brothers, John West, Andy West, and Rev. Steve West. Richmond is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Richmond graduated from Gadsden High School where he was a member of the Band and Honor Society.
He earned a B.A. from Birmingham-Southern College, his Master's Degree from Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University.
Richmond taught at the college level in various colleges and universities. He taught in California and returned to Alabama teaching at the University of Montevallo.
He became a published writer following his teaching career and currently has a book, "Frozen Ghost", going to publication.
Growing up, Richmond was greatly influenced by his time at Camp Sumatanga.
Richmond was an active member of Childersburg First Methodist Church where he currently served as the Lay Delegate to the Annual Conference as well as being a member of the Board of Stewards. He also taught Sunday School and was a member of The Men's Bible Class. Richmond was a very active volunteer with Celebrate Recovery where he served as Financial Secretary and kept the Book Table.
In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send donations to the Richmond West Memorial Fund at Childersburg First United Methodist Church, this fund will be used for current church repairs; or you may make donations to Camp Sumatanga in his memory.
All services will be officiated by Rev. Mike Holland, Rev. Amy Parsons Vaughn, and Rev. Steve West.
Pallbearers will be friends from various church members, friends, and family members.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 11 am at Childersburg First United Methodist Church. He will lie in state an hour prior to the funeral service. Participants are asked to wear masks. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm at Elmwood Cemetery at Birmingham, AL.
