Neil was born in Georgetown, Tennessee, the third son of Harrison Fletcher Cofer and Mary Shamblin Cofer. His two older brothers died prior to his birth. He was a graduate of Meigs County High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served for five years.
He graduated with honors from the University of Chattanooga in 1958. He was a public accountant and trust officer for Hamilton Bank and retired as senior vice president from First Tennessee Bank in 1989 to pursue farming fulltime. He was an active member of the Chattanooga Kiwanis Club, the Farm Bureau board of directors, an ordained deacon of Oakwood Baptist Church and a member numerous charitable boards. He was married to the former Betty Jo Ramsey for 48 years until her death in 2005.
Survivors include his wife of nine years Garnet Cofer, two sons, Rick (Crissy) Cofer of Harrison and Tom (Cindy) Cofer of Signal Mountain, grandchildren Caroline (Hugh) Faust of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, John Cofer of Chattanooga and Josh Cofer of Harrison, stepchildren Stan (Kate) Hackler of Murphy, North Carolina, Sheila (Darrell) Graves of Ten Mile and Hugh (Susan) Hackler of Mt. Dora, Florida and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Friday in the Valley View Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am- 12:00 pm Friday, April 15, 2016, before the service.
The family wishes to thank Kay Waters and Holly Hackler along with the staff of Hospice of Chattanooga for their faithful and loving care during his final days.
