Jan was born on January 30, 1951 to the late George D. and Mary Jo (Rhinehart) Smith. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marty.
Survivors include her adoring husband of 51 years, Jim; children, Sarah (Ed) Buiel and Andy (Chantelle) Nelson; beloved grandchildren, Will and Amelia; and her sister, Mitzi Smith. She had many friends and tried to make meaningful connections with everyone she met.
Jan graduated from East Ridge High School in 1969, where she was a majorette, and earned an associate degree from UTC in 1971. She loved all animals and spent many years raising and showing horses. In her later years, she enjoyed tending to her beautiful garden.
Visitation will be from 3 pm until 7 pm on Thursday, January 5, 2022 in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be at 12 pm on Friday, January 6, 2022 in the chapel with Chaplain Brian Burgess officiating.
