Gladys Evelyn Gilley, 90, of Millry, passed away November 12, 2017 at the Washington County Nursing Home. She was born September 27, 1927 to Charlie and Agnes Chafin. A member of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Millry, she served as the first post mistress for the now-closed Yarbo post office. Her favorite hobby was quilting, and numerous family and friends have received her quilts. She created her own design for Alabama and Auburn quilts. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Harle Gilley and sons, Donnie Ray Gilley and Harle Vernon Gilley. She is survived by her children, James Kenneth (Debbie) Gilley, Teddy Lamar (Theresa) Gilley, Earnestine G. (Donnie) Carpenter, Bobbie Jean ( David) Carpenter, Betty Jean (Earl) Dees; siblings, Warren Eugene Chafin, Ellen Alene Beech, Ella Jane Dees; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great, great-grandchild and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Reynolds Holiness Church in Chatom with the Revs. Danny Wilson, Greg Morris and Jeff Pruitt officiating and Lathan Funeral Home officiating. Pallbearers will be Monte Carpenter, Brock Carpenter, Austin McRae, Derrick Carpenter, Brandon Dees and Kyle Gilley. Great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
