Pieter J. Schiller

Pieter was born on January 14, 1938 in Orange, New Jersey. He was the son of John and Helen Schiller of Maplewood, New Jersey. Pieter was married to Betty Schiller for 55 years. He attended Middlebury College in Vermont and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Economics (with honors) and an MBA in Finance from New York University. Betty and Pieter and their family lived in Madison, New Jersey until 1988 when they moved to Concord, Massachusetts. Betty and Pieter then retired to their summer home in Chatham full time in 2005.

From 1961 through 1986, Pieter held a number of positions at Allied Signal, Inc. (now Honeywell International). Among other positions, he served as Director of Auditing, Assistant Corporate Controller, Treasurer, and Vice President for Planning and Development where he led the company’s active merger and acquisition program. In 1983 Pieter was appointed Executive Vice President of Allied Health and Scientific Products, a major business unit, and President of its Instrumentation Laboratory subsidiary.

In his second career, Pieter served from 1987 through 2006 as a General Partner at Advanced Technology Ventures, an early stage technology-focused venture capital firm with offices in Boston, Massachusetts and Palo Alto, California. During this time Pieter, focused on investing in the health care sector. He worked with more than twenty companies in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics and health care information technology. He also served as an Advisor or Director of several private companies in Massachusetts and of Fresh Track Capital, a venture capital firm based in Shelburne, Vermont.

Pieter spent much of his time supporting activities in the non-profit sector including serving on the boards of the Concord (MA) Museum, John Adams Innovation Institute, Partners Innovation Fund, Middlebury College Alumni Association, Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church.

Pieter is survived by his wife Betty, and his two daughters Katie (Schiller) Ward and her husband Jon Ward of Wayland, Massachusetts and Suzanne (Schiller) Loonie and her husband John Loonie of Boxborough, Massachusetts as well as his four grandchildren Zachary Ward, Andrew Ward, Ryan Loonie, and Erin Loonie.

The family will hold a private service and at a later date plan on having a celebration of Pieter’s life.
