Dr. Michael Burnes died June 8, after living courageously with cancer for the past 12 years. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 42 years, Beth “Timmi” Guren Burnes, his children Sara Burnes (and husband Michael Sanky) and Michael Burnes (and wife Lauren Chidsey). He was a beloved “Bubba” to Miriam and Matthew Sanky and Jack Michael Burnes. He is also survived by his parents, Maryanne and Charles Burnes Jr., and his five siblings — Maryanne, Mark, Charles III, Christopher, and David — and their families.
Despite the difficult hand he was dealt, Michael squeezed a lot of life into 67 years. He played college baseball until science labs conflicted with the schedule—and his love of science never wavered. To the bitter end, he read every study document and piece of research he could to understand his cancer and treatment. He shared his love of science with his children and taught them to appreciate the big and small miracles of the stars and the world around us.
After many years at Beth Israel Hospital, he ventured into private practice and became a proud small business owner. This experience, along with his participation in the boards of the Milton Hoosic Club and Oyster River Hills Association, gave him an outlet for his quiet and steady leadership abilities. He made many dear friends and touched many lives in these roles.
Until the combination of the global pandemic and progressive illness took their toll, Michael enjoyed world travel, kiteboarding, whipping up restaurant-quality meals, and spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In honor of Dr. Michael Burnes, a Celebration of Life will be held at the family home, 33 Meadow View Rd, Chatham, MA 02633, on July 7th 3-7PM.
