Daniel James Wirsing, 59, of Springfield, IL passed away at 2:57 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 9, 1964, the son of Ronald Nathan Wirsing and Judith Anne Wirsing. He married the love of his life, Marina Zuniga, in Hawaii on August 29, 1986.
Dan spent his childhood years in Genoa and Kirkland, IL. He graduated from Hiawatha High School, Kirkland, IL in 1982. Dan proudly served in the United States Army for 21 years, retiring as an Army SFC from Fort Sill, OK. After the Army, Dan attended Lincoln Land Community College and the University of Illinois Springfield earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. After retirement from the Army, Dan enjoyed working as a Deli Food Service Manager at Road Ranger in Springfield.
Dan was a noble and honest gentleman with a great dry sense of humor. He loved the Lord, attended Real Life Church in Springfield, and participated in various Bible studies. His favorite book of the Bible was Romans. He enjoyed playing card games such as Euchre and Spades, watching clips of America’s Got Talent, and listening to Christian music on WCIC. Dan enjoyed taking care of the house and took immense pride in his yard. He loved decorating every room of the house at Christmas and listening to both his daughter, Rachel, and son, Nate sing and perform in choirs and plays. He was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, always quick to share his wit and understanding with those misguided souls who supported other teams. Most of all, Dan loved being with his family and took great joy in bringing Marina coffee in bed every morning. He will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Randall Wirsing; and beloved dog, Otis.
Dan is survived by his wife, Marina; daughter, Rachel Leah Wirsing of Springfield; son, Nathan Ronald Wirsing of Springfield; sisters, Ronda (Rick) Ball of DeKalb, IL and Denise Hill of Genoa, IL; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Benny.
