Obituary of William Roger Goodman
William Roger Goodman, age 83, died July 21, 2022. Born on February 5, 1939, Bill was the first boy born in Crozet Hospital. He was the second son of James Harry Goodman and Katie Sandridge Goodman Wright, and the grandson of Logan Washington and Hattie Watkins Sandridge. Bill lived his entire life in Albemarle County. Bill was a proud graduate of Miller School where he excelled academically and in sports. He was quarterback of the football team and excelled in track and field. He received numerous awards including a four-year scholarship to the University of Virginia. He was Valedictorian of his 1957 Senior Class. He sang in the Glee Club and loved Elvis. He was a gifted artist, designer and carpenter. He designed the Class of 1957 plaque that is displayed on the Miller School Administrative building. Professionally, he worked his entire career as an engineer at Stromberg Carlson and obtained patents for his telephone relay designs. He traveled to Japan on behalf of this company. When he retired as an engineer, he began a second career working in his family’s business, Light Hauling & Delivery. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Nancy Virginia Hartman Goodman to whom he had been married 53 years. They were devoted parents to their three sons. Being Grandparents brought them much joy. They enjoyed gardening, their pets, and traveling. Bill and Nancy supported one another in their cottage craft industries, attending local fairs and markets. A huge sports fan, he loved the Washington Redskins (Commanders), the Virginia Cavaliers, and all things ACC! He once attended a University of Tennessee football game in support of a grandson and later commended he had trouble getting excited about rooting for an SEC team. Football was his favorite, and he never missed a UVA football game! He loved to “tailgate” and to cook for family gatherings. He is survived by his son, Jon W. Goodman and wife, Larisa who reside in Newnan, Georgia and his sister, Sandra Goodman Short and husband, Jim of Fort Worth, Texas; sister-in-law, Norma Kramer and husband, Lou of Earlysville, Virginia, brother-in-law James Wesley Hartman of Cresaptown, Maryland; and Patricia Ann Goodman, mother of two of his sons, of Powhatan, Virginia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
