Obituary of Patricia Spencer Workman
Patricia Ann Spencer Workman died April 12, 2021, due to metastatic breast cancer. She was born May 2, 1956, to Benjamin Pearson Spencer and Bernice Yvonne Morgan Spencer in Biloxi, Mississippi. Patty is survived by her loving husband, Harold Workman, as well as her precious children: Charles Gulat and his wife Kelly, Katy Gulat and her son Charlie, Nick Huczko and his daughter Audrey, Ben Huczko, Chris Workman and his wife Kelly and children Austin and Reagan, and Matt Workman. She is also survived by her very dear siblings: Ben Spencer, Linda Spencer Roberts, Deborah Spencer and Mark Spencer. Patty had a very interesting childhood; growing up in a strict military family and attending 11 schools by the time she graduated high school. Her parents made sure she was immersed in nature, learned the value of hard work, and they exposed her to different cultures. She graduated from Coastal Carolina Community College and became a nurse. She later also graduated from East Carolina University and then the nurse practitioner program at Duke University, despite many barriers along the way. Patty found immense satisfaction in nursing and the variety it offered. The last 13 years of her career were spent providing care to persons at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, a position she found particularly satisfying, as this fulfilled her lifelong goal of caring for an underserved population. She very much enjoyed working with the excellent nurses there to provide the very best care to their often-challenging population of patients who nonetheless were always extremely appreciative of the care they received there. Patty also enjoyed volunteering at the Free Clinic, Piedmont House, and with local wellness programs such as the Women’s and Men’s 4 Miler Training Program and the 10 Miler Training Program. She wishes to thank all the dear family and friends who were willing to accompany her on innumerable hikes and walks through the years. Those memories brought great comfort as the end approached. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to your local food bank or a charity of your choice. Family night will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Virginia.
