L. Robert Grogan, 89, of Earlysville, Virginia died on September 19, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Grogan, born in Reidsville, NC, graduated from Wake Forest University and received his Masters degree in Education from the University of North Carolina. He was a reporter for the Charlotte News, as well as a sports broadcaster, prior to focusing his career on education. He started as an English teacher in Rockingham Co, NC, where he met his wife, Marilea. His career included positions as Chairman of the English Department and Dean of Chowan University, Assistant Registrar at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Director of Admissions and Registration, and later Director of Graduate Admissions, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Mr. Grogan spent his career in education assisting students to attain their maximum potential. After 27 years with the university system, Mr. Grogan founded International Education Evaluations, Inc. which provided him the opportunity to continue to assist foreign students. In 1999, he retired to enjoy family and travel. Mr. Grogan was highly respected by his peers throughout the country and served as President of both the NC and the Southern Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers. He was responsible for developing and installing the computer system for student records at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the first such system in North Carolina; and, he provided advice to college registrars throughout the country as they moved into the computer age. Mr. Grogan was active for decades with Civitan International and served multiple terms as President of various North Carolina chapters. He was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, VA. Mr. Grogan is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilea Roberts Grogan, his sons, Keith Grogan of Atlanta, GA, Steven Grogan of Sumter, SC, Gary Grogan of Amherst, VA, his daughter, Lori Grogan Blumberg of Charlottesville, VA as well as nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Teague Funeral Home, located at 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903, from 6:30-8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. On Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 2:00 PM a memorial service will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC where Mr. Grogan was a devoted member for 43 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Department at 283 Reas Ford Rd, Earlysville, VA 22935.
