Obituary of Cyrus Alexander Weaver Sr.
Cyrus Alexander Weaver, fondly known by many as “Coach Weaver“, and by us as Cy, Dad, and Granddad, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. Cy was adopted by Miss Lucy Duke of Bumpass, Virginia, as an infant, and raised on her scenic farm, which has become a favorite gathering place for many friends and family from Charlottesville, Louisa, and beyond. We affectionately refer to it as “the fahm“, as that’s how it sounded when he said it. Cy graduated from Milligan College, in East Tennessee, in 1968; that same summer, Cy was married and began his coaching career! Both of which proved extremely successful. They started in Louisa County, Virginia, and then moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he began a long and tireless journey in education, athletics, and spiritual leadership. He served as an elder at first Christian church in downtown Charlottesville until, after 35 years of teaching in the Charlottesville City school system, he retired, though continuing to coach and officiate for another 2 decades! After retiring from teaching, thus freeing his days for farming and such, he began the full-time job that was the restoration of the beloved farmhouse. Those closest to him have had the tour (perhaps more than once!) and know that the farmhouse was “ pre-revolutionary war”and incredibly beautiful. He was always excited to share his home and his farm with everyone! In April 2024, Cy was inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame, honoring his aforementioned tireless service, as a coach, mentor, and official, over the span of six decades! He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucy Duke, and his sister, Shirley Keffer, of Bumpass, Virginia, and by his beloved son, Cy Weaver, Jr., affectionately known as Cap, of Charlottesville. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jackie Weaver; son Frank (Tracy) Weaver and daughter Karen (Tim) Honeycutt; daughter in law, Christina Weaver; and grandchildren Alex (Sydney) Weaver, Camden Weaver, Carter Weaver, Reagan Weaver, Kaitlynn Weaver, Maxwell Weaver, Piper Honeycutt, and Madelaine Honeycutt, all of Charlottesville. He will be hugely missed every day. His funeral service will be held at St Paul’s Memorial Church: 1701 University Avenue Charlottesville, VA 22903, on Thursday, September 5 at 10:00am. The 10:00am service will be preceded by an hour of family & friend time, to hug and reminisce, look at pictures, and remember Cy, Coach, Dad, Granddad, or whatever you called him! We encourage you to utilize that pre-service time to find parking, as it is tricky around there, especially on a weekday, when classes are in session at UVA. If you are able, park farther and walk a little. If you have anyone with mobility challenges, you could drop them off at the church and then park. It will all be ok! But do give yourselves time to get in, and get a seat. Immediately following the service, we will be heading down to the family farm to lay Cy to rest in the private family cemetery; 537 Lucy Duke Ln Bumpass, Va 23024. All are welcome. It takes around an hour to get there. There will be a lunch reception afterward.
