Barbara June Simmons Herndon

Barbara June Simmons Herndon, age 81, of Charlottesville, passed from this life on Thursday, March 30, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 22, 1935, in coastal Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Marian Simmons. She is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, J. Leroy Herndon; daughters, Gail Harris and husband, Richard, and Lisa K. Shifflett and husband, Gary; her grandchildren, Eric Huffman and wife, Kara, Amanda Kirby, Christopher Shifflett and fiancée, Jessica Martin, Brian Huffman, Stacie Shifflett and fiancé, Daniel Herndon; and her adored great-grandchildren, Michael and Kyle Kirby, Austin Morris, Shane Shifflett, and Everett and Porter Huffman. She was a graduate of Scottsville High School and after eloping built a career with her husband, Leroy, as a successful local businesswoman. Barbara loved children and enriched many children’s lives, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Leroy were members of the Elks Lodge and spent happy hours with friends there. Barbara’s family and many friends will treasure the memory of her warm smile, forgiving nature and practical wisdom. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2017, at Antioch Baptist Church, 4422 Antioch Rd., Scottsville, Va. A gathering of family and friends for a time of remembrance will follow the interment in the churchyard.
