William Randolph Hunt

“Randy”: age 71, died Monday, January 16, at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, after struggling with congestive heart failure. William Klinghoffer was born in New York City, NY, on July 30, 1945, the son on Dr. Henry Klinghoffer and Julia Klinghoffer. After the unexpected passing of his father in 1953, William and siblings, Edward and Barbara lived in Mckeesport, PA where Julia worked as a nurse in the local hospital. William never forgot New York, taking his daughter, Kathleen (Katie), to visit the city of his youth in 1999. An Air Force Captain during the Vietnam War, William served the United States for four years. Returning from the War in 1972, William was able to attend college through the G.I. Bill, completing a business degree at Pennsylvania State University. He became a management consultant and enjoyed a long career that took him across the U.S. and around the world. William enjoyed travel, particularly to Africa and Europe, bringing home numerous treasures and souvenirs. Married in 1981, William married and moved to Charlotte, NC and the last name was changed to Hunt. His only child, Katie, was born in 1985. Following a divorce, William continued to work and travel, ultimately sending Katie to college and encouraging her to attend graduate school. In the mid-1990s William met Shirley Guyton-Simpson, with whom he shared a long and loving companionship. One of William’s favorite hobbies was watching and critiquing films, including classic and contemporary pictures. William enjoying telling stories of watching old movies on the big screen, and could always be counted on to give a recommendation for a new release to watch in the theatre. In 2009, William was diagnosed with tinnitus, a disorder of the inner ear that causes ringing and other sensations. Soon after, William became an advocate for others struggling with this disease, contributing to support groups. William required quadruple bypass surgery in 2013; in 2015 he was diagnosed with non-alcoholic cirrhosis. His family is profoundly grateful to the nursing staff at Novant Presbyterian Hospital for their level of care and sincere compassion.

He is survived by his only child, Kathleen Hunt (Benjamin Hoyle) of West Des Moines, IA; his brother, Edward Klinghoffer of Alexandria, VA; his sister, Barbara Johns (Dr. Martin Johns) of Peters Township, PA; two nephews, Dr. Martin Johns (Gretchen) of Mckeesport, PA and Matthew Johns of Peters Township, PA; a niece, Julia Johns of Peters Township, PA; and his constant companion Shirley Guyton-Simpson of Charlotte, NC.

The celebration of life and memorial service will be private. Visitation with family 6-8pm Saturday at the home.
