A son of the late Thomas Welch Helms and Mary Ethel Sherin Helms, he was born in Charlotte on June 5, 1938. Mr. Helms retired from the City of Charlotte in 1989 where he was a supervisor in the Parks and Recreation Department. Mr. Helms was a founding member of Mercy Baptist Church where he was a deacon, taught Sunday School and sang as a soloist.
He enjoyed writing poetry, playing golf and the guitar.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00PM, Saturday, November 10th at Mercy Baptist Church, 6028 Fairhaven Drive with Pastor Terry Bowen and Pastor Allen Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Plaza Road Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00PM to 9:00PM Friday evening.
Mr. Helms is survived by his wife, Pearl Cox Helms; a son, Terry Duckett, of Charlotte; two daughters, Guynita Hoesman (William), of Concord, Sherry Wren (Timothy), of Charlotte; a brother, James Helms (Mary), of Burnsville; a sister, Margaret Petty, of Concord; thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Helms was preceded in death by a son, William Reid Helms, Jr. and a daughter, Lorraine Eastridge.
