Weece Wood Duffy, 91, died in the arms of her oldest son Steve on Sat. Sept.20th at Asbury Care in Charlotte. One of six children of Lura and Mack Leonard Wood, she was born in Harnett County, NC. She graduated from Campbell High School and from the Elizabeth Buxton Hospital School of Nursing in Newport News, Va. She joined the Navy as an RN and served on the USS Repose during the Korean War. Weece traveled extensively, both during her service and later in life. In 1956 she married LeRoy Mitchell Duffy and was happy as a marine wife for many decades. Weece was genuinely interested in people and always saw the best in everyone.
Weece is survived by her sons, Steve (Teresa) of Huntersville, Don (Laura) and Gary (Deana) of Charlotte. Also surviving are her sisters Janice McLeod of Buies Creek, NC and Billie Sawyer of Erwin, NC, granddaughters Renee Collins (Jay), Carson Duffy and Alexis Duffy. Weece was blessed with two great granddaughters, Carissa and Ilex Collins and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 56 years, Lt. Col. LeRoy Mitchell Duffy, an infant daughter Deanna Elizabeth Duffy, grandson Stephen Patrick Duffy Jr. and siblings Hortense Parker (Buies Creek), Gene Wood (Lillington) and Mack Wood (Arlington Va.).
The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of Wilora Lake Lodge for brightening Weece’s final years and Asbury Care for their support.
A celebration of Weece’s life is planned for Friday, Sept. 26th at 2:00 at McEwen Funeral Home 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212 with Burial to follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
