He retired from several large oil companies including Exxon. A member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church, Mr. Kirby was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years Katherine L. Kirby. Mr. Kirby is survived by his sons, Barry (Nona) and Randy (Pam); four grandchildren, Lisa Armstrong (Michael), Pam Knowles (Doug), Jennifer Evans (Rich), Gerald Hunter (Anna); two step-grandchildren, Kent and Josh Orr;
10 great-grandchildren, Laura Prater (Travis), Devon (Mary Rose), Caleb (fiancé Shinece), Cassidy Armstrong, Haley Haynes, Trey and William Evans, Taylor, John, and Cameron Bureau; one step great-grandchild, Landon Orr; one great, great-grandchild, Beckett Prater.
The family would like give a special thanks to Mr. Kirby's caregiver, Ms. Judy for taking such good care of our Dad and Grandfather for the past two years.
Mr. Kirby was predeceased by a brother Floyd Kirby and one great-grandson, Nicholas Armstrong.
Mr. Kirby volunteered at Red Cross for over 40 years and donated 14.5 gallons of blood. He is a lifetime Mason member from 1971-2015 and 40 years as the treasurer at West Gate Lodge 738. He was a Scottish Rite Mason for thirty-two years and started and completed his degree work in just 35 days.
In 1997, Mr. Kirby received an award for his outstanding volunteer service at the United Way of Central Carolinas, the Oxford Children's Home in Oxford, NC, serving widows of lodge members, and the abused women's shelter.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Kirby will be held at 11:00AM in the Paul Helton Chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery with full Masonic Rites with Masonic Pallbeaers. His family will receive friends from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at the funeral home.
Mr. Kirby will be remembered for his love of God, his family, and his community.
