Victor Brown Cook “Vic”,71, of Charlotte, passed away at his home, Tuesday morning, October 15th 2013. Vic was born in Charlotte, NC on October 6th 1942, the son of Lonnie B. Cooke and Kay Bailes Cooke, also of Charlotte, NC.
Vic’s passion for aviation, took him to The United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country for 4 years. In September 1966, he joined the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. While servicing his community with CMPD, he earned his Commercial Aviation License. He was a member of a pioneering group of helicopter pilots with CMPD’s 1st Helicopter unit (“Snoopy One” or officially known as Bell 47-5) which took flight in the early 70’s. In the 1980’s, Vic continued his devotion to flying and felt honored to be a part of The Helicopter Unit’s expansion into their new Jet Ranger/ “Snoopy”.
He was a charter member of The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9. He retired in 1992 after 30 years of service.
Vic was a proud Member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Vic was a beloved husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Brenda H. Cook, of Charlotte, daughter, Kimberly M. Cook, of Charlotte, sister, Dixie K. Gertsman, of CA, cousin, James Harley of Pineville, NC, niece, Bianca A. Barton of Charlotte and nephew, James F. Barton of Washington, DC.
Vic was a remarkable man and will be truly missed.
A memorial service to celebrate Vic’s life will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, October 18, 2013 at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Rd. Charlotte, NC 28227 with a reception immediately following at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to NC FOP Lodge #9 1201 Hawthorne Lane Charlotte, NC 28205.
