She and her twin sister, Emma, the youngest of eight, were born on April 1, 1933 in Dallas to the late Fleet Martin Moore and Annie Pegram Holland.
After relocating to the Charlotte area at a young age, Vertie spent most of her childhood and teenage years living in the western side of the county and working on the family farm. Vertie was a strong and skilled farm worker, spending her days harvesting crops and canning vegetables and jams. When she was 20, she changed career paths and began working at American & Efird Mills in Mt. Holly as a Machine Operator, and she remained with the company for over 40 years until her retirement in 1995.
When Vertie was in her early 40s, one of her brothers got married, and in this new family that was now joined to hers through the marriage, Vertie met her future husband, Robert. Vertie fell in love with the courageous and distinguished Marine, and they were married soon after. They spent over 40 years together until Robert passed away in 2017.
Vertie and her husband joined Thrift Baptist Church in the 1970s and remained lifelong members. In later years, Vertie became a member of the Super Sixties group at the church. Vertie fearlessly loved God and she was unceasingly devout in her faith.
One of Vertie’s favorite pastimes was traveling to her favorite destination - the beach. She loved lighthouses and just thrived around the ocean. She was fun, imaginative, and always full of life; Vertie loved to dance and sing, especially to bluegrass and gospel music, and she enjoyed this hobby well into her 80s! When she wasn’t out of town or out dancing, she liked to sit at home and watch both old and new TV. She loved watching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show just as much as she liked catching Dr. Phil and The Young & The Restless when new episodes aired.
Ever loving and always kind, Vertie never judged the people around her, always choosing, instead, to accept them for who they were. Her warm and ready acceptance, coupled with her vivid storytelling and ready and eager laugh, are just a few of the things that her family will miss so much now that she is gone.
Vertie has been reunited in Heaven with her parents, Fleet Martin Moore and Annie P. Holland Moore; her loving husband, Robert S. Moore; and her siblings, Carlos Moore, Lillie Mae Reid, Robert N. Moore, James Moore, Charles Moore, Emma Isenhour, and Grace Ballard.
Those left to honor Vertie’s memory include her stepchildren, Bobbie M. Mortiz (Roy), Robert “Rabbit” Moore Jr., Lisa Moore, and Sean Moore (Darlene); as well as numerous treasured nieces, nephews, and other family members; her beloved church family; her dear neighbors; and many cherished friends.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00am until 11:00am on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The funeral service is to be conducted at 11:00am, immediately following the visitation, in the Paul Helton Chapel at the funeral home, where Rev. Gene Lathan is to officiate. The burial will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vertie’s name to Thrift Baptist Church in Charlotte.
