Born March 23, 1970, in Pensacola, FL, Troy was the son of Robert F. Barlow and Malinda Barlow.
Following graduation from J. M. Tate High School in 1988, he furthered his education at the University of West Florida where he earned a degree in Environmental Resource Management & Planning. He began his career working as an Office Engineer for J. A. Jones Construction Company and was promoted to Superintendent at age 27, the youngest in the company’s history. Troy continued his career in the construction industry where he started and managed two of his own construction companies and also obtained his real estate license. He returned to the corporate construction industry in 2013 and spent the last seven years of his career working for Ferrara-Buist Contractors as Vice President of Construction.
Troy was a visionary and very creative. He could fix, create or build anything. Not only was he well-liked and respected by his colleagues, but also by many in the industry across NC and SC.
The joy of Troy’s life was his family. He and his wife, Katie, met in high school and were married for 23 years. He was a loving, proud, devoted and hands-on father to Taylor. Troy was dedicated to supporting Taylor’s dream of playing softball at the collegiate level as a pitcher and attended all of her school and sports activities. He gladly spent many hours after work and on weekends working with her on drills or traveling with her for tournaments. Theirs was a special relationship. Troy also was a gentle and fun father to their dogs, Bodie and Bailey and enjoyed their companionship.
One of Troy’s most memorable traits was his intelligent, dry wit. He was always able to make people think and then laugh. Troy liked to consider himself a master griller. He liked trying new, flavorful, exotic foods and grilling any kind of meat he could get his hands on. He also enjoyed any and all beach and water related activities; fishing, crabbing, surfing, skiing and boating. Troy was authentic, salt of the earth kind of guy who was very caring and devoted. He knew what his priorities were and lived by them. Troy was an example to many on how to be good husband, father, friend, co-worker and human being. He was a friend to most everyone he met and enjoyed spending time with them and drinking hoppy beer, smooth bourbons and listening to good music.
In addition to Katie and Taylor, Troy is survived by his parents, Bob and Malinda Barlow of Cantonment, FL; his two sisters, Amanda Fahnestock of Pace, FL and Kristin Zschiesche (husband Joe Zschiesche, son Ward Zschiesche and daughter Lily Jo Zschiesche) of Aledo, TX; Katie’s parents, John E. Trainor and Mary Kathleen Trainor of Pensacola, FL; Katie’s brothers, Tim Trainor (wife Becky, sons Jack Trainor and Justin Trainor) of Falls Church, VA; Mike Trainor (wife Adrianne, sons Ben Trainor and Zachary Trainor) of Greensboro, NC and Katie’s sister, Kelly Matsey (husband Bob Matsey, daughter Brianna Dunn ((husband Bradley Dunn and grandsons Grayson and Trainor Dunn)) and son David Ratté (wife Margo Ratté) of Huntersville, NC.
