Mr. Thomas Herman Alley, Jr., 89, of Charlotte passed away January 18, 2012 at Presbyterian Hospital.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Harry & Bryant Company at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2012. The committal and graveside ceremony honoring Mr. Alley’s valiant World War II service will follow at Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. Ministers Sharon Doar and Joe Aldrich of Myers Park Baptist Church will be officiating. The family will receive friends at Harry & Bryant on Sunday, January 22, between 4:00 and 5:30 p.m.
A native of Charlotte, Herman was born in a small, frame house on West Bland Street on May 25, 1922 to Thomas Herman Alley and Daisy Simpson Alley. He graduated from Central High School in 1941, and then the American Institute of Banking and Rutgers Graduate School of Banking after serving three years in the U.S. military.
Mr. Alley’s military service initiated in August of 1942, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army and then served in World War II with the renowned 101st Airborne Division, as a member of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, F Company. The young Staff Sergeant was presented with several awards for his heroic service, including the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star Medal. As recently as 2011, he was appointed a “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor by a decree of President Sarkozy of France. His single most memorable moment in life was the emotion-filled jump into Normandy as a paratrooper on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
In addition to his military service, Herman enjoyed a fulfilling career in banking, being employed as Assistant Vice-President of Union National Bank, Senior Executive Vice-President of Ervin Construction Company, Owner and President of Currahee Company, Vice-President of John Crosland Company, and President of Stockton-White/First Citizens Bank Mortgage Corporation. He retired from First Citizens Bank in 1995.
Mr. Alley was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his wife Louise Morrison Alley. He is survived by sons, Ronald Alley and wife Donna of Beaufort, SC, Thomas Alley and wife Kim of Charlotte, NC, Timothy Alley and wife Brenda of Beaufort, NC; a daughter, Teresa Alley Benner and husband Frank of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Jacqueline Alley Perez of Yuma, AZ, Jennifer Alley Allen and husband Robert of Raleigh, NC, Christopher Benner of Charlotte, NC, David Benner of Charlotte, NC, Sharon Alley Hill and husband Steve of Beaufort, NC, Lauren Alley Woodruff and husband Clay of Charlotte, NC, Lindsay Benner of Jacksonville, FL, Paul Alley of Charlotte, NC, Jonathan Alley of Greenville, NC; great-grandchildren, Cameron Alley, Zachary Martel, Sierra Willis, Charlotte Woodruff; great-great-grandchild, Kolin Walley; and long-time friend and companion Susan Anderson of Charlotte, NC.
