Thach Kim Nguyen, a computer programmer and resident of Charlotte for 45 years, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, 5/22/2021, after a two year battle with lung cancer. It metastasized to his brain 7 months ago but he fought the disease courageously until his last breath.
Thach was survived by his sisters Chi Thi Kim Nguyen, Ngoc Thi Kim Nguyen, Mai Thi Hong Nguyen, and his brothers Dzung Anh Nguyen and Dan Quang Nguyen. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. Chinh Tri Nguyen and Mrs. An Thi Trinh, his brothers Duc Tien Nguyen and Tung Bao Nguyen, his sisters Vinh Thi Xuan Nguyen and Dung Thi Kim Nguyen.
Thach was truly a fighter. During his early childhood he had polio but with his determination he was able to walk normally. Later in his childhood he had tuberculosis and once again he won his battle. In 2005, he had a heart attack and needed triple bypass surgery. Then finally in 2019, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.
Thach was born in Hanoi, Vietnam on September 16, 1944 to Chinh Tri Nguyen and An Thi Trinh. He was a graduate of Nguyen Trai Middle School and Chu Van An High School and studied law at Saigon Law School. He was drafted and served in the Vietnamese Army. While in the army he was a platoon leader assigned to the army division to protect the north security belt of Saigon city. Later he was promoted to second lieutenant and served in the Vietnamese Army Computer Center.
He came to America in 1975 and had lived in Charlotte since 1976. Before coming to America, he studied programing at Fort Benjamin Garrison, Indiana in 1972 and earned ADP Officer Course Certificate in November 1972. He was a life-long learner. Since arriving in America, he earned an Associate Degree in Business Data Processing (1978), and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina in 2000.
Thach was an avid gardener, he spent hours tending his gardens and plants. He even received a neighborhood beautification award for his beautiful gardens. During his final months, he spent many mornings and evenings on his front porch or deck to admire and enjoy the beautiful blooms, fragrance and colors from his plants and flowers.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service, 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, NC. A Buddhist Ceremony will be held on May 28, 2021 at 2:00 PM and will be officiated by TT Thich Thien Quang from Cuc Lac Temple. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. He will be buried at Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton, California, near his mom and other family members.
