Sandy was born in Albany, Georgia on May 13, 1946, to Lacy Leroy and Dolores Dzierzgowski Hamilton. She graduated from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh and UNC Greensboro. Sandy was a gifted artist and teacher who taught in Guam in the early 1970s and more recently at Reedy Creek Elementary School in Charlotte. She retired from Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Schools in 2013. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Charlotte and the Beta Tau Chapter of The DKG Society International for educators.
Sandy lit up every room with her bright smile and infectious laughter. She was a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, and she will be dearly missed. She is survived by her son, Craig Newton; sister, Madeline Hamilton; niece, Sharon Connelly; brother-in-law, Charles Malone; and nephew, David Malone, his wife Kara, and their son (great-nephew) Henry Malone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Newton; her parents; and her sister, Donna Malone.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 22, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at McEwen Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28262, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. A graveside service will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, 7632 Hood Road, Charlotte, NC 28125. The family requests that masks be work by all in attendance.
